Meet the Cookbook Authors: Jyoti and Auyon Mukharji In-Person
Heartland Masala is a vibrant and richly illustrated cookbook by Kansas City-based mother-son duo Jyoti and Auyon Mukharji. Blending traditional and diasporic Indian recipes with lively essays and historical context, this unique collaboration offers a flavorful journey through Indian cuisine—from Punjab to Bengal and beyond—with an American Midwestern twist. Drawing from over 14 years of Jyoti’s popular home cooking classes, the book includes both beloved dishes like Saag Paneer and Vindaloo and lesser-known gems like Bengali Murgh Rezala and Anglo-Indian Spiced Liver Toast. Auyon Mukharji is a musician, writer, and culinary historian who spends most of his time thinking about food. Jyoti Mukharji is a chef, teacher, and retired physician.
