Afternoon at the Movies - Mister Roberts In-Person
Out of all the movies released about World War II, “Mister Roberts” is unique because there is not one battle scene or weapon shot. The film takes place far from enemy lines, aboard a navy cargo ship in the Pacific during the waning months of the war. The story revolves around the Captain and Mister Roberts in a battle for the souls of the ship’s crew. Jack Lemmon, in his screen debut, won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The Picture’s star, Henry Fonda and its director John Ford came to blows during the shooting of the movie. Ford was fired from the film and replaced by Mervyn Leroy. The movie was adapted from a hit Broadway play that Fonda had performed the title role in for almost three years and had won the Tony award for his work. Learn about these interesting facts and many more from the movie guy as we talk about “Mister Roberts” with Henry Fonda, James Cagney, William Powell and Jack Lemmon and then show the movie.
