Afternoon at the Movies - Mutiny on the Bounty In-Person
“Mutiny On The Bounty”, made in 1935, is one of the greatest maritime adventure films of all time based on the real mutiny of the HMS Bounty in 1789. Clark Gable reluctantly shaved off his trademark mustached to play Fletcher Christian as he goes against the tyrannical Captain Bligh, played by Charles Laughton. The movie, at a cost of $2 million dollars, was the most expensive project MGM had ever made at the time. It was shot In Tahiti, the South Pacific and on Catalina Island where a replica of the HMS Bounty was built and used for shooting. Charles Laughton got an exact replica of his character’s uniform made from The London Company that actually tailored the real Captain Bligh’s uniform, Grieves of London. It took almost two years to complete production of the film and earned Gable his second Academy Award nomination, he had won the previous year before for Best Actor for Frank Capra’s “It Happened One Night.” Learn about these interesting facts and many more from the movie guy as we talk about “Mutiny On The Bounty” with Clark Gable, Charles Laughton and Franchot Tone and then show the movie.
