Afternoon at the Movies - The Philadelphia Story In-Person
This 1940 Romantic Comedy was the comeback film for Katharine Hepburn, who, after the bomb of the 1938 screwball comedy “Bringing Up Baby”, was labeled box office poison by Hollywood and could not get a film role for two years. Based on the hit Broadway play which had starred Hepburn, she had first wanted to cast Clark Gable and Spencer Tracy as her co-stars but they were unavailable. The famous opening scene of Grant putting his hand over Hepburn’s face and pushing her back in the doorway was improvised on the set. The film became a huge hit and was nominated for 6 Academy Awards including Best Picture and won James Stewart an Oscar for best actor.
