Afternoon at the Movies - Apollo 13

Afternoon at the Movies - Apollo 13 In-Person

Based on the real incident involving spacecraft Apollo 13 which took off in April 1970 and was to be the third mission to explore the moon until an Oxygen tank exploded in space almost stranding its three astronauts. For director Ron Howard realism was the key to making the movie. Two individual lunar and command modules were built on a soundstage. A mission control set was also built for shooting which was an exact duplicate of the real control room in Houston. Kevin Bacon, Tom Hanks and Bill Paxton filmed scenes on an aircraft known as the “Vomit Comet” that was used to train astronauts. The movie was nominated for 9 Academy Awards winning two Oscars, for Best Sound and Best Film Editing.
