Afternoon at the Movies - Network

Afternoon at the Movies - Network In-Person

“Network ” was a film that seems to have come true in the field of network news. A satire about a news anchor who states he is going to shoot himself on network television and then becomes a mad prophet of the airwaves, the film popularized the words, “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore.” The film was Peter Finch’s last role (he died of a heart attack promoting the movie) and posthumously won him the Oscar for Best Actor. Directed by Sidney Lumet with a screenplay by Paddy Chayefsky, the movie is a scathing indictment of television from a writer who made his mark in television. Henry Fonda, Paul Newman, George C. Scott, Gene Hackman and Glenn Ford were all considered for the role of newsman Howard Beale but Australian actor Peter Finch got the role. Lumet was concerned about his accent but Finch proved he could do a perfect American accent and won him over.

Learn about these interesting facts and many more from the movie guy as we talk about ”Network” starring Faye Dunaway, William Holden and Peter Finch and then show the film.
